MAXIM MAX3286 MAX3289/MAX3296 MAX3299 LAN Laser Drivers Manual

The MAX3286/MAX3296 series of products are high-speed laser drivers for fiber optic LAN transmitters optimized for Gigabit Ethernet applications. Each device contains a bias generator, laser modulator, and comprehensive safety features. Automatic power control (APC) adjusts the laser bias current to maintain average optical power at a constant level, regardless of changes in temperature or laser properties. For lasers without a monitor photodiode, these products offer a constant-current mode. The circuit can be configured for use with conventional shortwave (780nm to 850nm) or longwave (1300nm) laser diodes, as well as vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). The MAX3286 series (MAX3286–MAX3289) is optimized for operation at 1.25Gbps, and the MAX3296 series (MAX3296–MAX3299) is optimized for 2.5Gbps operation. Each device can switch 30mA of laser modulation current at the specified data rate. Adjustable temperature compensation is provided to keep the optical extinction ratio within specifications over the operating temperature range. This series of devices is optimized to drive lasers packaged in low-cost TO-46 headers. Deterministic jitter (DJ) for the MAX3286 is typically 22ps, allowing a 72% margin to Gigabit Ethernet DJ specifications. These laser drivers provide extensive safety features to guarantee single-point fault tolerance. Safety features include dual enable inputs, dual shutdown circuits, a...

MAXIM MAX3293/MAX3294/MAX3295 RS-422 Transmitters Manual

The MAX3293/MAX3294/MAX3295 low-power, high-speed transmitters for RS-485/RS-422 communication operate from a single +3.3V power supply. These devices contain one differential transmitter. The MAX3295 transmitter operates at data rates up to 20Mbps, with an output skew of less than 5ns, and a guaranteed driver propagation delay below 25ns. The MAX3293 (250kbps) and MAX3294 (2.5Mbps) are slew-rate limited to minimize EMI and reduce reflections caused by improperly terminated cables. The MAX3293/MAX3294/MAX3295 output level is guaranteed at +1.5V with a standard 54Ω load, compliant with RS-485 specifications. The transmitter draws 5mA of supply current when unloaded, and 1µA in low-power shutdown mode (DE = GND). Hot-swap circuitry eliminates false transitions on the data cable during circuit initialization or connection to a live backplane, and short-circuit current limiting and thermal-shutdown circuitry protect the driver against excessive power dissipation. The MAX3293/MAX3294/MAX3295 are offered in a 6-pin SOT23 package, and are specified over the automotive temperature range.

MAXIM MAX3291/MAX3292 Manual(1)

The MAX3291/MAX3292 are high-speed RS-485/RS-422 transceivers with preemphasis circuitry, suitable for long-distance communication. The data rates are programmable from 5Mbps to 10Mbps for MAX3291, and up to 10Mbps with a single external resistor for MAX3292. These devices are full-duplex, operate from a single +5V supply, and offer a low-current shutdown mode. They feature driver output short-circuit current limiting and a fail-safe receiver input that guarantees a logic-high output if the input is open circuit. A 1/4-unit-load receiver input impedance allows up to 128 transceivers on the bus.

MAXIM MAX3274 Manual

The MAX3274 dual-rate Fibre Channel limiting amplifier is optimized for use in dual-rate 2.125Gbps/1.0625Gbps Fibre Channel optical receiver systems. An on-chip selectable fourth-order Bessel Thompson filter offers 15dB (typ) of attenuation at 2GHz to suppress the relaxation oscillation (RO) found in legacy transmitters. The amplifier accepts a wide range of input voltages and provides constant-level output voltages with controlled edge speeds. Receivers using the MAX3275/MAX3277 transimpedance amplifiers (TIA) and the MAX3274 dual-rate limiting amplifier can meet the Fibre Channel receiver sensitivity optical modulation amplitude (OMA) specification of 49mWP-P at 2.125Gbps and 31mWP-P at 1.0625Gbps. Additional features include a programmable threshold loss-of-signal (LOS) detector, output squelch, and bandwidth select. The MAX3274 features current-mode logic (CML) data outputs. The MAX3274 is available in a 16-pin QFN package, making it ideal for GBIC and small form-factor receiver modules.

MAXIM MAX3273† +3.3V 2.5Gbps Low-Power Laser Driver Manual

The MAX3273 is a compact, low-power laser driver for applications up to 2.7Gbps. The device uses a single +3.3V supply and typically consumes 30mA. The bias and modulation current levels are programmed by external resistors. An automatic power-control (APC) loop is incorporated to maintain a constant average optical power over temperature and lifetime. The laser driver is fabricated using Maxim’s in-house, second-generation SiGe process. The MAX3273 accepts differential CML-compatible clock and data input signals. Inputs are self-biased to allow AC-coupling. An input data-retiming latch can be enabled to reject input jitter if a clock signal is available. The driver can provide bias current up to 100mA and modulation current up to 60mAP-P with typical (20% to 80%) edge speeds of 59ps. A failure-monitor output is provided to indicate when the APC loop is unable to maintain average optical power. The MAX3273 is available in a 4mm✕4mm, 24-pin QFN package, as well as in die form.
