South Australia Diving and Snorkelling Guide

Update: 31 October, 2023

This book aims to help you identify fascinating species you might find while snorkeling or diving in South Australia. In our southern Australian waters there are more than 10,000 species of plants and animals and most are found nowhere else in the world. South Australia has a unique marine environment, stretching from rugged cliffs and beautiful bays along the coastline to open expanses of ocean where some animals live at depths of more than 5000m. Some of our underwater habitats that you might explore include rocky reefs, sandy sea floor, seagrass beds, kelp beds or even mangroves. Nineteen state marine parks and seven Commonwealth marine parks (which are further offshore) are working together to help protect these incredible ecosystems and the habitats and species they support. In this guide we have included a small sample of the more common species that you might see underwater off the coast, in the gulfs or under jetties in South Australia. Some of these species you see may have travelled from far away.
